This wine is aged for six months in new French oak barrels, allowing it to develop structure, elegance, and subtle complexity. Crafted primarily from the native Rară Neagră grape, beautifully complemented by Malbec and Syrah, it represents a harmonious blend of local character and international depth.

In the glass, it displays a deep garnet red color with brilliant clarity.

On the nose, the wine opens with ripe red cherry and black plum aromas, layered with delicate hints of cocoa, sweet spice, and freshly cracked black pepper. Subtle notes of dried fruit and refined oak add warmth and sophistication.

On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with velvety tannins and well-integrated acidity. The juicy fruit profile of Rară Neagră and Malbec is balanced by the peppery spice of Syrah, while the six months in new French oak bring nuances of vanilla, toast, and noble wood. The finish is smooth, round, and lingering, leaving impressions of dark chocolate and gentle spice.

This is an elegant yet approachable wine with both structure and softness, making it highly versatile at the table.

What to pair it with:

  • Grilled beef steak
  • Oven-roasted lamb
  • Duck breast with red wine sauce
  • Slow-cooked veal dishes
  • Mushroom-based dishes
  • Aged semi-hard cheeses
  • Roasted vegetables with herbs

Château Vartely entered the Moldovan wine market in 1996. From the very beginning, the winery focused on quality and quickly became one of the country’s leading producers.

In 2004, the Château Vartely company was officially established. This marked an important step toward international markets and export-oriented production. Soon after, the winery began receiving awards at major international wine competitions, confirming its growing global recognition.

The estate is located approximately 50 kilometres north of Chișinău, near the historic wine town of Orhei. This area has a long tradition of premium viticulture.

Château Vartely farms a total of 550 hectares of vineyards. These are divided between two of Moldova’s most important wine regions: Codru and Bugeac (IGP Valul lui Traian). This allows the winery to work with different climates, soils, and vineyard conditions, carefully selecting the best sites for each grape variety.

Annual production exceeds 4.5 million bottles. The portfolio combines indigenous Moldovan grape varieties with well-known international cultivars. Winemaking is focused on balance, varietal expression, and regional character.

In 2008, Château Vartely expanded its activities with the opening of a wine tourism complex. Inspired by traditional Moldovan architecture, the complex is integrated into the vineyard landscape. It offers cellar visits, guided tastings, and gastronomic experiences.

Today, Château Vartely brings together scale, technical expertise, and terroir diversity. The wines are consistent, expressive, and firmly rooted in Moldova’s leading wine regions.

Located in the southernmost part of Moldova, within the Gagauz Autonomous Territorial Unit, Bugeac is one of the country’s most powerful and sun-drenched wine territories. As a core area of the Valul lui Traian PGI, it is widely regarded as a benchmark for structured red wines and opulent dessert styles.

Climate

Bugeac is defined by a hot, dry continental climate with long summers, intense sunlight, and low humidity. Rainfall is limited, encouraging low-yield viticulture and concentration in the berries. The extended ripening season allows grapes to reach full phenolic maturity, resulting in deep color, ripe tannins, and generous fruit expression. Warm autumns are particularly favorable for late-harvest and dessert wines.

Soils

The region is dominated by carbonate-rich chernozem (black earth) soils. These soils are fertile yet well-structured, with excellent water retention balanced by mineral components that support vine health during drought conditions. The calcareous influence contributes structure and depth, while maintaining balance in high-alcohol styles.

Terroir Expression

The landscape consists of open steppes and gently rolling hills, where consistent sun exposure shapes bold, expressive wines. The terroir typically produces:

  • Full-bodied, fruit-driven reds
  • Wines with rich tannic structure
  • Concentrated dark fruit profiles
  • Warm spice and earthy undertones

Despite the heat, careful vineyard management preserves balance and allows for surprisingly refined acidity in well-crafted examples.

Grape Varieties

Bugeac excels in red wine production (approximately 60% of total output), including:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Merlot
  • Saperavi
  • Fetească Neagră

White varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are also cultivated, often yielding ripe, textured styles with generous aromatics.
