A ruby-red wine with expressive aromas of red fruits and delicate floral notes layered over a subtle earthy background. The bouquet reveals nuances of wild berries, gooseberry, and a gentle hint of white pepper.

On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied, lifted by its naturally vibrant acidity. This freshness gives it a lively, almost tonic character, leading to a refined finish with remarkable personality and finesse.

About the Grape – Rară Neagră

Rară Neagră, meaning “Rare Black,” is one of Moldova’s most cherished indigenous grape varieties. Traditionally cultivated in the southern regions of the country, it is known for producing elegant, fruit-driven wines with bright acidity and soft tannins.

Unlike heavier international red varieties, Rară Neagră expresses finesse rather than power. It typically offers aromas of red cherries, raspberries, dried herbs, and subtle spice. The grape reflects Moldova’s continental climate and limestone-rich soils, resulting in wines that are fresh, balanced, and highly gastronomic.

Food Pairing

Thanks to its vibrant acidity and moderate structure, this wine pairs beautifully with:

  • Pan-fried or grilled chicken
  • Stuffed bell peppers
  • Savory tarts and vegetable pies
  • Rabbit dishes
  • Light pork preparations
  • Semi-aged cheeses

Its freshness also makes it an excellent companion to dishes with herbs, mild spices, and tomato-based sauces.

The origin of TOTEM lies in three vital elements that shape every great wine: earth, sun, and water — the fundamental forces that create terroir. Yet beyond nature itself, TOTEM reflects an inseparable connection with the winemaker, the human spirit that transforms these elements into wine.

This symbolic harmony between the natural energies of the land and the passion of the creator became the foundation of the TOTEM concept. It is a tribute to the deep cultural roots of Moldovan viticulture, where winemaking is not merely a craft, but part of the nation’s identity.

“The creation of wine is part of our DNA — a living expression of our history and culture, which over time has become a noble national calling. Inspired by this passion and guided by a force in which, like a protective totem, our ancestors believed, we continue at Château Vartely to craft wines symbolically named ‘TOTEM’.”

TOTEM represents a collection of five wines, each infused with local symbolism and legends that celebrate Moldovan heritage. The series reflects both tradition and modern vision, connecting past and present through terroir-driven expression.

Each bottle invites discovery: by scanning the QR code on the label, the consumer can explore the four symbolic elements behind the collection — earth, sun, water, and the totem itself — and uncover the legend that brings these wines to life.

The IGP Valul lui Traian wine region, situated in southern Moldova, is defined by a complex geological structure that plays a decisive role in the style and quality of its wines.

Soils

The dominant soils are calcareous chernozems, formed over limestone bedrock, with varying proportions of clay, sand, and marl. These soils are moderately fertile, promoting balanced vine vigor and naturally limiting yields.

  • Limestone and calcareous substrates contribute to elevated pH in the soils, enhancing aromatic precision, acidity retention, and mineral expression in the wines.
  • Clay-rich layers improve water retention, providing a crucial reserve during the region’s dry summer months and supporting steady vine metabolism through the ripening period.
  • Sandy and loess components ensure effective drainage and encourage deep root penetration, increasing vine resilience and terroir expression.

Climate–Soil Interaction

The warm continental climate, moderated by proximity to the Black Sea basin, interacts with these soils to extend the ripening cycle. Day–night temperature variation supports phenolic maturity without loss of freshness, while soil heat retention accelerates ripening early in the season and stabilizes it later.

Viticultural Impact

These soil conditions favor:

  • Small to medium berry size
  • High skin-to-juice ratio
  • Concentrated phenolics and color
  • Balanced sugar accumulation with preserved acidity

As a result, wines from Valul lui Traian often show ripe black and red fruit profiles, savory spice, firm yet polished tannins, and a saline–mineral finish, reflecting the region’s calcareous foundations.
