Negru de Purcari is a flagship red wine from Château Purcari, produced in the Ștefan Vodă wine region of southeastern Moldova. The wine is a classic Bordeaux-inspired blend, adapted to local terroir and tradition, combining Cabernet Sauvignon, Rară Neagră, and Saperavi.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, firm tannins, dark fruit concentration, and aging backbone.
  • Rară Neagră (indigenous Moldovan variety) contributes elegance, spice, red fruit freshness, and regional identity.
  • Saperavi adds deep color, density, acidity, and additional tannic grip, enhancing longevity.

Together, the blend achieves balance between power, freshness, and complexity.

What to Pair it With:

  • Red Meat and Game:  Aged beef steak, charcoal-grilled striploin, roasted leg of lamb, or baked venison roulade with figs.
  • Rich Poultry: Duck breast or pheasant, particularly when accompanied by sauces with plum, chestnut, or berry notes to match the wine’s flavor profile.
  • Traditional Food: Mamaliga (Moldovan polenta) with sour cream and feta cheese (brânză).
  • Cheese:  Mature, aged cheeses like Parmesan, Cheddar, or matured Gouda

Château Purcari is one of Moldova’s oldest and most prestigious wine estates, with origins dating back to 1827 when it was established by imperial decree as the first specialized winery in Basarabia. Located in the Ștefan Vodă wine region in southeastern Moldova, Purcari sits at the heart of one of the country’s most acclaimed terroirs.

With its historic cellars, long viticultural lineage, and strategic location close to the Black Sea influence, Purcari has become a reference point for Moldovan premium wines.

Over the centuries, Purcari has built an international reputation, earning hundreds of medals at major global competitions such as the Decanter World Wine Awards, International Wine & Spirits Competition, and others. In recent years, it has also been recognized as one of the most awarded wineries in the world, maintaining its position as a leading producer in Moldova and Central & Eastern Europe. Today, the estate combines historic cellars with modern winemaking practices, producing wines from carefully tended vineyards in the IGP Ștefan Vodă.

The estate also includes a château-style visitor complex with tastings, tours, and hospitality experiences that reflect its wine culture and heritage.

The climate in Ștefan Vodă is moderate continental, with warm, dry summers and mild autumns. The proximity to the Black Sea brings climatic stability, reducing temperature extremes and extending the vegetative cycle. This environment allows for slow, even ripening, optimal phenolic development, and the preservation of natural acidity.

Vineyards are planted on low to moderate elevations, including gentle slopes and flat terrains, with varied exposures that maximize sunlight and promote air circulation. These conditions help limit disease pressure and ensure consistent ripening across vintages.

Soils are dominated by deep chernozem, rich in humus and essential nutrients, with excellent water retention balanced by good drainage. Deep vine roots enhance resilience during dry periods, contributing to wines with texture, concentration, and mineral clarity.

The region supports a broad range of international varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, alongside local Moldovan grapes such as Fetească Neagră, Rară Neagră, Fetească Regală, and Viorica. All varieties express a distinct regional signature, combining ripeness, freshness, and structural precision. Wines from Ștefan Vodă typically feature firm yet polished tannins, well-integrated acidity, and pronounced aromatic definition.
